Kevin Somers: where is he now?
Questions were raised in another thread by Ashaki on the nature of my relationship with Kevin Somers. So here's the scoop, and sorry to say, no good dirt. This might be a little known fact, but Kevin and I both got "recruited" for YCDTOTV from the same middle school, and were 2 of only a few people who ended up in the same East end, Ottawa high school after that. Kevin lived on the same street as my best friend, and the irony of all of this is that I completely lost touch with Kevin for a long time there, and I figured he was off living in some exotic locale, like Australia or Alaska. Turns out Kevin lives not too far from where I do, in Canadian geographic terms, and he is doing some really interesting things these days. (another irony: both he and Ashaki are writers)
I didn't take this photo: I am 99% sure that it was taken by the lovely Carole Hay, our drama teacher. Kevin is in his show 2 clothes, I must have been shooting for show 3. I don't know if these shows ever made it on to Nickelodeon; these were the very first, live programs we made, when YCDTOTV was a local Ottawa show.

So where is he now? Well, as I mentioned, Kevin is a writer. When we first reconnected, Kevin was (and still is, I think) writing for Women's Post. Just before Christmas this year, he dropped by my office with a copy of his latest book, I'm Gretzky, which I promptly read and found hilarious, if not a little dark. And he also writes for Raize the Hammer, and recently mentioned YCDTOTV in an article.
Kevin has also offered to post here: Lemme know what you think!!

It would be great to hear from Somers on here!!

Nickelodeon never showed those episodes...they started with the 1981 episodes. The Canadian episodes were still one hour long, I think, but all the local contests and local extras were cut out for the US versions.
And yeah, I'd love to hear from Kevin Sommers. :) Mind you, I only just saw his episodes a few years ago, but still....

Where can we get those Canadian Episodes? Were they ever released on VHS or DVD?

Great to know the update on Kevin. Hopefully we can use this information in the "Where Are They Now" section of the ycdtotv.com website.
As Jenn said earlier, neither the 1 hour live broadcasts nor Whatever Turns You On ever aired on Nickelodeon. Even the hour long 1981 series was pared down to half an hour to fit Nick's format as well as cut out some of the local Ottawa references. In seeing some of the hour long shows from 1981, there are clearly scenes that were re-shot later. One that comes to mind is the Crime & Vandalism show where the name of a local Ottawa newscaster was replaced with Dan Rather after Moose's soap box was stolen.
Bruce : only 3 episodes of the original 1979 series are known to exist on tape. They were held by the brother of a 1979 cast member and are widely available on the trading circuit. The others are not known to be available. 4 episodes of the hourlong 1981 series were recorded by a cast member and are also available on the trading circuit, but those are a little more rare.
Looking forward to hearing from Mr. Somers! Is he any relation to Ms. Brett Somers of Match Game fame? :-)

Wow, in clicking on some of the links and then seeing a picture of Kevin Somers, he looks like a cross between Kevin Schenk and Geoff Darby!

Awesome picture! I recognize the outfit Kevin's wearing. Didn't he wear that for the WTYO pilot? I haven't pulled out my copy of it in a while.

I agree with Tim J. I'd like to see what the old cast members are up to.The more cast members that post, the more official this christinemcglade.com site will be.
Most everyone has late 90s interviews posted. This site could help us keep up with our "You Can't" favs.Where is Lisa Ruddy these days?I don't kn...oh,oh!

Thanks Moose for following up on the "Kevin" inquiry. I totally believe you. Ahem. But do you know how much press and money you could have made by going with this? All the major magazines would've eaten this one up with a Moose and Kevin scandal. I tried to hook you up with worldwide press. Sure we can't do something for a book? Dig deep! Dirt. I want mud! Any mud? Darn.

damn!! should have given that one more thought. I'm pretty sure Kevin would be very pleased with worldwide press and lots of cash; maybe he'll post some of the things I'm hiding-er-never mind...

Hi Christine:
Congratulations on a great site. You were always competent.
Is that first comment from Draby? If it is, I want my money back. I paid people to have him killed.
Just kidding, Drab. Tell Oprah about my book, please; it's genius.
All is well in Kevinland. It's good to know our show has had a positive impact.
I remember riding a bus for two hours, twice a week for months of drama classes before even seeing a camera. Now, there's homage to YCDTOT on Family Guy and Fatal Attraction. It's nice.
Thanks for the kind words regarding my book, Moose. I spent 13 years working on it and hope fans of the show will read it and spread the word.
There were couple of mistakes in your blog, Christine. First, my book is called I'm Gretzky, You're Gretzky, like I'm OK, You're OK. Secondly, I write for Raise the Hammer, not Raze the Hammer. We're trying to build up, not burn down, you maniac.
I'll post more on Sunday.
Kevin

I hope that I'm not starting mess...
Wow! I don't believe it! Here's Kevin! The plot thickens and I have my cut and paste functions burning for more! What's up with the bloody mouse on the cover of your books though Kev? I thought it was genius though... a gun above the mouse's head. I can't stand rodents, so... Hey, it's kind of out there; that's how i roll too. I've read your poetry Kev. I like the one about not smoking, etc. Starting it off with 'if you read this, not to take it seriously'. Kevin, as I read your poetry, I kept thinking of the rhythm to Pusherman by Curtis Mayfield.

Actually, I enjoyed your articles and poems Kevin! I am interested in your book with the rat's head blown off.

sorry, mang-I knew the title was wrong, just a function of rushing. I indeed knew the book is called I'm Gretzky, You're Gretzky but you know what-I didn't make the connection to I'm OK you're OK so I'm glad you did. And, I actually did think that pinko-lefty Hamilton blog was indeed called Raze the Hammer!! (sidebar: Kevin helped my sister, Lisa, get published in RAISE the Hammer, so apart from all of his good writing and funny demeanor, he rocks for that)

My sister and a friend both downloaded some episodes of "Whatever Turns You On" and burned them to CD for me. (Yeah, I'm known for my YCDTOV habit.) (They only work on the computer, not on a DVD player.) I am not sure where they found them.

Oh yes, I'd almost forgotten... You had appeared on a science-themed television show a while back too, didn't you? Must've been 25 years ago now, I imagine. There was a gentleman who explained all kinds of science project type ideas, and you sort of watched and assisted a little bit. Do you remember that at all, or am I just dreaming that up?

wow-THAT's a blast from the past. That was a show called "Let Me Prove it" that we made for C-Channel, one of the first Canadian cable channels. It didn't last (the show, or the channel) but it was fun. We blew stuff up.

You know, the bottom line is that YCDTOTV has received the shaft from becoming a legitimate DVD available in all stores. There are worse shows out there portraying everything wrong with the world and they have DVDs on the shelves. I'm not convinced of why the show isn't on DVD. I don't buy the politics existing about why YCDTOTV isn't on a major label or DVD distributor. Signing a petition, I'd bet, is worthless. What I really want to know is, who burned who? Can someone shed any light on some facts? By the time the show comes out on DVD at this pace, Moose's grandkids will be eligible for Social Security. At that point, YCDTOTV will be a Saturday afternoon infomercial... just like those Dean Martin's Dinner Toast commercials that hardly anyone I know gives a hoot for.

This is rather slutty. Why would Christine write such crap? Maybe she has a darker side than any of us are aware of!
