the "Moose" Moniker
When I was 9 we moved to Ottawa, Ontario. We moved in December, and driving North East on highway 7 was like a scene from Kamouraska; snow, woods, snow. For a kid from Toronto, it was a little alarming. At that age I was NOT pleased about moving (I am convinced that there are life changes at age 9 that rival those of the teenage years, and even menopause. I think there is an exit from childhood that is really tough. Carole Hay once said to me that "nine is the saddest age") and I wasn't keen on making friends.
The funny thing is, when I started at my new school, everyone thought I was this other kid's sister. This other kid was named Danny Burns, and he was this short, freckled, Irish-looking kid who everyine assumed I was related to. I was also short, freckled, and Irish looking, believe it or not, so of course we became friends. We carried this ruse that he was my brother all the way into high school.
Sometime in grade 6, Danny Burns started calling me "Moose", based on the fact that I was always the smallest kid in the class. I think he may have been referring to the character in the Archie comics, the giant blonde one, called Moose. I think I revealed this in a moment of stupid candour to Roger Price, and after gleefully rubbing his hands and likely compulsively combing his hair, he decided to make it part of the show.

Interesting story Christine. On the show you guys used to call Lisa Ruddy "Motormouth". Was that really her nickname off air also?

Yea, 9 sounds about right. I had a couple of eye opening life changes myself at 9. So thats the story behind "Moose". Yep, Thats pretty cute.

I can *somewhat* relate, I guess. I sort of distanced myself from my peers when I went off to a middle school that most of my elementary friends weren't going to. Of course, I was 11 at the time. I didn't like very many kids there; we didn't exactly relate. They seemed so different from the kids I was with in elementary.
Also, it's funny, I was 9 years old when Nickelodeon pulled YCDTOTV from their line-up in the mid 90s. I wasn't all too happy about that. ;-)

It's like I always say, there's nothing more sinister than a compulsively hair-combing British man. Ah, that's right, I never say that. Oh darn..

I also moved at age nine, from a big city to a smaller city. And I was *miserable* and could not have been less interested in making new friends. I hear ya.
Didn't pick up any life-changing nicknames, though.

Alright, I have to be honest here.
All I keep thinking of is Mr. Ed...
The song...
A horse is a horse, of course of course...
I think you should find that Danny Burns chump and leave his car on bricks for calling you "Moose". How could you really know at 9 years old what he was saying? He was starting stuff! I know 9th graders, being a community leader!
And he tried to water it down with an Archie Comic book character? You bought that?
BLAHHHHHH!! AHH-HA-HA! BLAHHHHhHHHHH!!!

Ok, alright. I'm ok now. I've done the posting wrong. I'm soooo sorry. Look, I guess I just expected something really touching about the name "Moose". So, for future reference and for another great entre into your biography best seller I'd like to create for you, just say that your name came from a giant moose that you wrestled down to save a group of door-to-door saints or something like that. That friend of yours... That's cold. Archie? Just to think that that's all he could think of... when you asked how the heck he got that... BLAAAAAHHHHH!!!! HA-HA-HA! OK. ok. ok. I'm ok. check the pulse. Ok, I'm ok. I'm not crying. it hurts.
I love this post though. Now we all know how you got that name.

Where did you live before Ottawa?
Kids called me "Chwissy" because of a childhood lisp - i hated them for it but that didn't stop them. I also hate those people today that call me the informal "Chrissy" or "Chris" in formal or professional situations - i don't know them, they aren't friends and i'd like them to call me Christine in those situations thank you very much!
Sorry, rant over.

P.S.: According to Wikipedia (there's an entry for "Christine McGlade" or maybe it's YCDTOTV) the Moose name was also because your curly hair looked like antlers. (I have very curly hair and I am skeptical about this.) Is that true?? Or is that yet another reason I tell my students *not* to use Wikipedia??

Not true! No antler connection, at all. But that is, after all, the power of Wiki: you can go on in there and make the correction!

Hey Moose! Very cool, I always wondered why they called you that. Anyway, 9 was a tough age for me too; a lot of people picked on me (then I started karate, and everything changed!). I don't really have a nickname that stuck- this one kid who was in my school play with me calls me "Psycho Woman," but that's about it. :)

Greetings,
I want to thank you for the work you did in the 1980s. "Moose" is a name that I recall well.
YCDTOTV shaped my "stage persona" and eventually allowed me develop the personality needed to effectively do my current job...an 8th Grade American History Teacher in South Texas.
Thanks.

I recall that you were short. Moose are the opposite of short. Sometimes the funniest jokes are the simplest ones. Like Curly on the Haarlem Globe-Trotters. I am laughing all over again.

I always wondered why they called you 'Moose'. I felt bad for you because I thought they were implying that you were fat. I didn't understand this, because you were anything but. But I digress... I loved the show in the early to mid-eighties. I was probably eight when I started watching. Now, my own children love to watch the little snippets of skits, etc, found on YouTube. YCDTOTV was one of a kind. No show has ever compared. You guys were hilarious. Thanks for the memories.
