Channels above 13??? Naw, it'll never last...
Talk about short-sighted. I recall very clearly (which is a bit of a miracle, since I am painfully aware that most of those reading this blog recall waaaaay more than I do about episodes, plotlines, cast...) when we found out that YCDTOTV was sold to an American "cable" channel. It was so disappointing!! We were all like "what is this fly-by-night, CABLE thing"?? It didn't seem like real TV. We were convinced that channels above 13 would never fly.
This is incredibly embarassing, now. It's funny, too-I recall being far more impressed when Whatever Turns You On was picked up by our Canadian network, CTV, than by the whole Nickelodeon thing. At least CTV was a real channel (ie, on the "dial"). Little did I suspect that one day, people wouldn't even know what the heck a "dial" was.
How many people out there don't remember a time when you had to get up, walk across the room, and turn a "dial" to change channels??!!

In my town, growing up, we had four UHF channels and just one UHF channel, a Spanish station on Channel 41. I remember hearing rumours about this "cable." It had 36 channels. All I could think of was "Well, I guess there could be three more Spanish stations in town, what ELSE would they show?"
Low and behold, I was watching the Bozo show from Chicago, Romper Room from New York and of course, YCDTOTV from Ottawa (via Nick).
Now I have 70 or so channels and only because I can't afford the 500-600 channel digital channels out system provides. I guess there's more out there than a few netowrks, and spanish stations. :)
(And yes, I STILL go up to my TV and change the channels...I lost my remote years ago!)

4 VHF channels, I mean.

haha. I remember my black and white sears 20 inch tv when I was growing up. It had the "dial" with the 13 channels and the U channel right at the top. And above it, was a dial that was much like a radio dial, and I had no idea what that was all about. When I was 8, my parents bought a big floor model Tv with a push button "dial" and a remote control. And it was colour! that was back in 1987. We got cable shortly after that, and I was amazed at all the channels we could get. By the way Christine, I remember watching you growing up, and I always envied you kids cuz I could imagine how much fun you all had acting together! Looks like it was a real blast!

Even our first cable box required us to get up and change the channels by hand. We were probably one of the last people to get a color TV, let alone cable. The first program I ever watched in color in my parents' house was the final episode of MASH on February 28, 1983. We got cable (Donrey Cablevision to be exact) a few days later and the cable box was brown and had nothing but a bunch of black numbers and a little plastic arrow. When we wanted to watch a program, we'd have to get up and move the plastic arrow under the number of the channel we wanted. I think the box went up to the channel 52 or something like that. Today, the boxes are all digital and have 3 digits. Craziness...

I remember it as well but we are about the same age so it goes without saying. but yes my momand dad always made me get up and change it. i was their remote control.and the reason we remember well i speak for myself is that it was a huge impact on my life growing up.

I'm with Rob: our cable box was an A/B switch that had to be manually flipped. When I went to grad school, I had a similar problem: the basic cable system had about 150 channels, and my VCR (which I used as a converter) only went to 99. I remember being so angry when I found out you guys were in Canada: I had to figure out a way to get my parents to move there (yes to "Canada") so that I could audition for the show. Alas.

Is it me or was the channels back then way cooler than today? We have all of these channels but most of the programmings garbage. Plus TONS of commercials.
BTW, did any of you have a TV with a remote that you pressed a mechanical button that made a sound to change the channel?
Reply to this
One of my friends had a remote that just clicked. Instead of choosing the channel, it just turned the dial one channel up. :)

I was in the hospital for about 2 weeks last year, and their remotes were still like that.

...cable t.v. today reminds me of the Bruce Springsteen song: 57 channels, where he sings "57 channels and there's nothing on...

I was four years old, in 1988, when my parents gave me my own first TV for my little room, and I remember it very well, including my parents surprising me with it as soon as they had it hooked up. I think it was like 12"? It was small and sat on one of the shelves right in front of my bed with the stuffed animals. Anyway, it also had the dial. Nickelodeon was channel 10 at the old house we lived in, so I could watch it on that TV.
Then when we moved about 20 minutes away in 1992, Nick was channel 33, and my parents had to get me a new box to hook to the TV so I could watch it. :-)

Summertime. Forget 13 channels, cable was necessary! Without cable, there were 13 channels of news, soap operas, PBS(snore), and the 700 Club until 3pm pt. As a kid, cable was where it was at and Nick attracted kids with shows like YCDTOTV and Danger Mouse and the 3rd Eye! Everyone I knew, knew of YCDTOTV and had cable. Everyone knew what it meant when a kid on the street said "Da-I heard that" or "Water" or "I don't know". Those of us from the city could also respect a diverse show too. Regular tv didn't always represent that unless you were watching the news. Honestly, the America/Canada thing didnt't even play a part in how we felt watching YCDTOTV. The show was just a classic and funny! I was 10 in 83'... I was the perfect age group/audience and alot of my humor I use today stemmed directly from your humor/skits. Anyways, thank goodness for cable television!

I think I have you all beat. We got our first color TV in 1989. And it was second hand from my grandparents. (I wound up with it when I moved out of the house and used it up until about six months ago.) And this color TV still had a dial, so you had to change the channels by hand. Or hook up a cable box or VCR.

Something I thought was funny was a friend of mine had a TV with a dial AND a remote. The remote had one button and when you clicked it the dial changed up one channel with a really loud "KA-CHUNK!"

I remember having to get up and change the dial on the TV! Now it seems impossible we ever had to do that!

Funny how the more channels there are, the less there is to watch on TV. I had 70 channels when I last had cable and I don't think I watched more than six, what with all the religious channels and the home shopping channels and the public access channels.
In fact the only reason I thought cable was better than broadcast when we first got it in like 1981 or so was because the reception was better and you didn't have to have your little brother stand next to the TV doing a yoga position while holding the antenna to get a good picture.
Now I get much more entertainment from the web, even moreso because unlike TV it's interactive. Not only can I see clips of Moose on YouTube, but I get to write to her and maybe she'll even write back.
I grew up in New York City, where we had so many channels it was almost like having cable anyway. But I hardly ever watched TV in those days, it wasn't until we moved to Florida that I started watching TV, because there wasn't anything better to do out in the 'burbs.
All I watch now are reruns, documentaries and sports anyway: I don't have cable and I don't miss it.
By the way, I have been meaning to ask, how'd you get the nickname Moose?

That's probably worth a post, just to do the originator of the name justice...will post on that Q!

I remember when my family finally got a color television it was something that took getting use to I also remember getting in trouble as a kid for being too close to the color television with a magnet. Though it was quite funny seeing Mr. Rogers in several colors such as purple.

I can recall the days when remote control's were only seen in TV shows. In the early 80's we had a color TV with 13 channels. In '82 The cable company (Don't remember which one/so many since then) just came to our town (Providence R.I./US). All the neighborhood kids came over to my house cause my family was the first on the block to get cable. We all though " What the heck is this?". After the cable guy installed the box my mom gave me the remote control ( to figure out how to work it) and said find something to watch. While flipping through the channels, low and behold we came across... yep you guessed it! YCDTOTV. We were glued to the TV set that day and for several years afterward.

It's nice to finally feel young in these pop culture discussions.

I too remember having to get off my rear and change the channel by hand. I grew up watching Sesame Street and Mr Roger's Neighborhood. Then having shows like YCDTOTV was awesome. Nick was a whole channel with stuff I liked to watch(Mr Wizard's World and Turkey Television)was very cool! Now cable has 200+ channels with mostly junk. Well, I should go and try to find the dang remote so I can watch shows where people eat rats out of a blender. It's amazing how far we have come.

My parents never had cable, but I remember when a new UHF station went on the air, the station had special antennas distributed to various stores in the state, so you could attach it to your TV and get good reception.
Then those new antennas became standard on TVs as more UHF stations popped up... and now, it's a question of whether the TV is cable ready or not and antennas are generally unheard of these days.

Shouldn't the networks (ABC,CBS,NBC,FOX...) be striving to have more interesting programing? Some of the sitcoms are really good, unfortunately I don't discover them until they get syndicated and put on cable stations.
Charmed was a good example.I watched it more on TNT than UPN.I really think there should be more focus on channels
1 - 13!

After YCDTOTV went off the air, I cancelled my cable and haven't had it since!

Our cable box was this faux-gold looking behemoth about the size of a 12-pack of sodas and it did indeed have a dial. Very addictive and fun for a 2-year old.
I never knew YCDTOTV truly by name until right about the time the show was cancelled. Before kindergarten, I always called it "The Show With The Triangles."

Others, perhaps older, with a bit of a new age bent, called it "the show with the geodesic dome"...

It's funny to read all this. We had cable starting in the early 80's, but my last job, at a restaurant, we had a TV/VCR for training new hires. No cable, naturally. We were known to put the TV on on the days the Steelers were playing (for the customers of course), and to see the kids who had never seen an antenna, let alone all the contortions required of it and sometimes the person trying to get a viewable picture, especially to get the Monday Night Football games, was pretty funny. And some of the most colorful language...but we won't go there!

Up until about the age of 6 or so I think I watched all of two channels, Nickelodeon and PBS. I've never lived in a house with more than one television. I actually didn't really discover YCDTOTV until about November 2006, since I wasn't allowed to watch it while growing up in the late '80s-early '90s. Around my house, you really *couldn't* do that on television. The only recollection I had of the show before that was a vague memory of the link set, the green stuff, and an extremely vague recollection of Senator Prevert turning on a faucet and something brown come out of the tap... or I could just be mixing things up in my head, as I've yet to see that scene in anything I've downloaded.

I can remember they installed cable boxes in the summer of '86- nice big number keypad on the box itself, leave the TV on 4, no more searching in the couch cushions! (for the pliers because the knob was missing!)
"Oh, and you have some additional channels too...." MTV and Disney were premium channels then so we didn't have them, and of the ones that WERE added, Nickelodeon stands out because within an hour of the cable guy's leaving, I was doubled over laughing at YCDTOTV

Irony of ironies. I've lived in Ottawa all my life, and I never heard of "You Can't Do That on Television" until we got "Super Channel" on "Pay TV". :)
Eventually, I discovered the show later on CJOH. I was shocked that the show kept going on strong with YTV years later.
I used to be a little jealous of the kids in the show, especially after I learned that it was filmed in Ottawa! I swear, Christine, you looked like my sister back then. ;)
That said, I was hooked on first sight. I really hope that a full release of the Canadian-versions would be available on DVD so I can inflict this part of my childhood on my wife. :P

Wow, talking about a time when there was only 13 channels on the dial. My family didn't get a color television set until 1986, and I don't remember having a remote control. The cable box had buttons and a dial with a little latch on it to find the channels. My grandparents got a huge satellite dish (this was just before they started scrambling signals) so I would position the dish and turn to the transponder (channel). If you played your cards right, you could watch YCDTOTV at least four times a day minimum on the east and west coast Nick channels combined, but I digress.

OHHH I remember well....I lived in the "Wrong side of the tracks" part of my hometown in the early days of YCDOTV, but in early '81 we were the right side since we got cable run out there first. Mainly since we still had power poles and the other side of the river had to have lines run underground. We discovered YCDOTV by accident while surfing the channels with some buddies that had come out there, and we were hooked!!! Wasn't long before word got around school about the "Cool" show on the kids channel. It was a heck of a sight one afternoon seeing 4 cars with teenagers, a '61 Fairlane (Meteor for the Canadian folks), '77 Monte Carlo, '55 Chevy, and a '68 Buick Electra 225 (Deuce and a Quarter) all crossing that old bridge to go up and see M&L (our code name for Moose & Lisa). Yes, we did have crushes on you two...Hey we were HS kids!!! LOL. But when my Dad got home it was scatter time!!! I sure miss those days, had a lot of fun.
Can't find nothing that good on the channels now...only thing I can get into now is the Adult Swim on CN..and only if it's FLCL or Cowboy Bebop...
Great to have you here Christine!!!!

I was born in '84, so I always remember having cable, and watching YCDTOT, that is until my parents ended up banning the show from our house. To this day, I can't remember why, but I'm guessing one of the bits thought it wasn't appropriate for a young boy (I was probably like 8, or younger). I'd love to see some complete episodes again.
Funny, now that I'm living on my own, I watch so little TV I actually cancelled cable and using the old antenna. I'm close enough to two cities to receive about 20 channels; good enough for me.

My cable box has 1500 channels! I can't possibly think about having only 13 channels, although my WatchMan has 13 stations available on it. The only problem is trying to get a picture. So hard! My mom's family was the 1st to get cable on the block, however my dad's family was the last to get cable. The cable boxes now can let you record programs on the box itself! You just press the record button and it records the show to the box. You just press the List button and select your program and push play on the remote. Tada! You are watching a program from the past. And you can fast forward and rewind, which is amazing because you don't have to watch the commercials! Well, thanks for letting me post on your blog, Christine! Take Care! :-)

Due to storms that hit this week, our cable system went out.I had to break out the old black & white TV with antenna! It is the only TV that will catch anything around here!Mostly watching the news for weather updates, but hey...
BTW,no cable means no Road Runner, which means thousands of people can't access the net.Thank goodness we got DSL!

I will bet you are unemployed, stalk young girls & sit in front of your computer all day with a box of Kleenex by your side.

hell, i remember when i was a kid, the only way to guarantee watching a whole program was to plop down in front of the tv and physically hold on tho the dial so no one coming in could change the channel! then we got the big brown box with the cord and a long row of buttons. j.xo

What happened to You Can't Do That On Television? It was such a funny show! I was addicted to this show. I watched it from 1979 until the end of the show.
