YCDTOTV on You Tube?
I had an email from a 12 year old who has recently discovered You Can't Do That on TV: I think this is quite amazing. She sent me the nicest email, and because she's 12, I don't want to say her name, but she knows who she is and I'm thrilled to get emails from people younger than my children (!)
It's kind of funny because over the last few years there was a lot of talk of Nickelodeon possibly putting the series, or parts of it, out on DVD. For some reason (which I suspect is connected to inability to make a deal with the writer's guild, but don't quote me) The DVD's were never released. So I have a couple of questions:
-is this because they just wouldn't make their money back? Is there just no demand for DVD's and, a connected question:
-if you want to see old eps of You Can't do that on TV, can you find them online anyway?
To my mind, DVD's are great for collectors: people who really like to own the media, have a high quality copy, and have the added features that would go with. But if you just want to watch the show...can you do that online just as easily??

Hi Christine just to comment on your questions posted here, There is always a demnd for DVD , Yes you can find small pieces of the show on the net but not alot really extensively. mostly small portions of a episode or if lucky one whole segemnt but nothing more unless you can find a seller on line who happens to have the series from somewhere. so its not so easy to watch on line really. Gosh what i wouldnt love to have the whole series on crystal clear cut. i could sit there and relive my whole growing up in the years it spanned. you know many times i blew off a date or going out with my friends just so i could stay home to watch the show. now i have kids of my own getting to the point where i am lettign them watch it and they love it. my littlest one is 3 and when they slime someone she laughs so hard.

The shows are available online both to view and to order for trading / purchase. The reason is this in the only way they are available.
YCDTOTV was a great show and was pretty significant to my generation.
If the show were available on DVD I would buy it. Heck go to a video store and look at all the stuff that has been put out and there is zero reason why it shouldn't be on.
But I think shows like YCDTOTV, Tomorrow People and others point out that todays young adult programming is very unintelligent. Very condecending.
I think another good point is that why is there so little Canadian Television brought into the US? YCDTOTV is one of those rare shows that actually made it in.

Hey Moose! FYI, it is on barthsburgery.com :).

that ones not as good i bought the entire series from episode one till the end. its at nickclassics.com and it is pretty reasonable in price too.

Hey Tim, are those playable video DVDs, or CDRs with files on them? I suppose they're the latter, if they squeezed all 11 episodes on 12 discs. Either way, that looks pretty tempting.

its a mix on the dvds themselves cause the show is so old and out of date some are files and others are from vhs tapes all formatted to dvd. they are compatable with any dvd system supporting dvd+R format which is basically any formatted dvd these days.so yes for the 60 dollars i paid very much worth it. to own every episode and bonuses ever worth it. as i siad being so old soem are a little shaky in the early years but as the series goes on it gets better but still can make it all completely out so its well worth it.i received it in about 3 to 4 days s o shipping was fast. its the only place out htere that does this that i know of. if you have the money its worth the investment to relive alot of the episodes we all grew up with.i just wish viacom woudl give in to christine and put the show out thru their own format. have you given up all together christine on the dvd project then?

What do we think: is this an official Nick product or a bootleg site??

1. No links back to other Nick sites
2. DVD sets that aren't avaliable elsewhere
3. Professional labeling and packaging is a "step further"
I'd wear my eye patch if I order from there...

Yes after looking into it more i see your rigth it is a boot site i guess. why doesnt nickelodeon go after them for name infringement then? i was so excited at finding the series set on dvd and seeing nickclassics as the website i never thought of anything else but yes finally i will get to see all the shows again. I am sorry if i offended you with posting the website Christine. i meant no ill will if you took it that way i was merely sharing with others asking here where i found something they were searching for. i loved the podcasts too. any chance of any new ones coming up soon or you sticking to the blog only? any other word on the dvd project as well? Viacom giving in ?

Actually this website of barthsburgery sells only a few episodes for dvd playing or the whole series is available but only to be viewed on a computer so your best bet is to buy it at www.nickclassics.com as it is the only place i found that sells all of the series for dvd play and at a reasonable rate.

I generally buy DVDs of television series specifically for the extra content. I live for outtakes, cast interviews, deleted scenes and all the stuff you would probably never see if the series were only available through downloads.
P.S. Yay! Glad to finally see that blog! Thanks for taking the time to put it together!

Hey Christine! Glad to see you back online again!
I own the entire series on VHS along with a lot of the rarities that have only been discovered in the last few years thanks to former cast & crew, etc. Am I happy with those? Yes, of course. Since it hasn't aired on any network, save for a few episodes on Nick during anniversary celebrations, in going on 15 years, it's great to have the collection.
But like you said, I am ready to have pristine, digital episodes on DVD that I can just cue up whenever I want. And since Viacom is assuming to own the rights to YCDTOTV just because it *aired* on one of their networks, the episodes are disappearing as quickly as they're being uploaded.
It's time for the powers that be to resolve their differences and get this series OUT. It's one of the 30 most requested series to put on DVD and is in the same company as TV classics such as The Wonder Years, Early Edition, and even Nick's own Salute Your Shorts.
Let's all hope for the best!!

Yes, Although I have the entire series on DVD from one of the websites listed, the quality is so poor- I'd love to also see the pristine, sharp images and especially all the special features! It infuriates me that this wonderfully hilarious show has not been put on DVD yet when there are so many lame and waste-of-time shows out on DVD...

Hi Christine!
I'm glad to hear from you on you website again! I check back regularly to see what's up.
I wrote you an email once before (a few weeks before SlimeCon '04, which I couldn't attend), but that was several years ago now. I've been a huge fan of the show since before I could remember (around 1987) and kept watching right up until Nickelodeon stopped showing reruns in the mid 90s. I was saddened by the thought I would never see the show again, but that was until 2000 when I got internet access and discovered that people were trading copies of the episodes. It took me a few years to collect all the existing episode in the series on VHS (which I'm now in the process of archiving to DVD to preserve them).
I was ecstatic when YCDTOTV was supposed to come out last year, and then extremely disappointed when the whole Rewind series was cancelled. We were *so* close (that kind of bad luck reminds me of the show itself, how everyone always had bad luck until the opposite sketches came. haha).
Maybe we'll get lucky and see the show on the shelves.

I wonder if we are beyond the DVD thing now...I wonder if it would be worthwhile to try and get high quality streams available on something like Joost...? I'm wondering if Viacom just doesn't see that they'll make their money back. I truly don't know what happened there, with the DVD project.

Because the show ran for so long, it would take quite a few volumes to get the whole series out on DVD. Viacom would probably be more interested in releasing a "Best Of" collection, which would probably pull in more money than just the first couple seasons, and would show them how many people are interested in the show after so many years.

this is true like i said i just bought the entire series start to finish and extras and it was encased onto 12 discs, so yes production on it would take alot of spending but i really feel they would make their money back over the long run of it. guess like christine said Viacom doesnt think so.. im so glad i bought the series set for a good price on line.

I agree with everyone- I have the entire series on DVD and the quality is terrible. That set would be flying to the dumpster faster than someone could be slimed if Viacom every released the series on DVD. I would absolutely pay for it- My 14 year old son loves the show as much as I do! My son and I actually choose not to watch TV- there is very little on that is worth wasting our busy lives on. But we love watching YCDTOTV together and a few other movies and shows.
I agree- the cast should make money on the DVDs; I am just glad there are some out there to allow this wonderful show to be preserved.

Christine,
How do you personally feel about the episodes being available online? Obviously you wouldn't mind getting paid for them being on DVD but right now this is the only way that the show is being preserved..
do you have any comments on this?

well, the tough question. I'll be honest: I think content wants to be free. At this point I would rather see it out there. However, I think there are fans out there who would get a kick out of what some of the former cast members (esp. Les) could add to the special features of a DVD. I may be only speaking for myself and other cast members, but I don't think in general it is the actors who make money out of DVD releases, so if the show is out there on the web I don't feel like I'm missing out on a windfall.

You could, there's always youtube and the WMVs of the show that are floating around...but I have one or two of the episodes on VHS, and, let me tell you, Youtube doesn't compare to good nice clear VHS tapes, even if they're a few generations (and a few decades) old. DVD would be even nicer.

Although if advances made incredibly good quality video at incredibly low bitrates....

It would be spiffy if they allowed the show to be put on DVD. Everytime I manage to find an old episode it takes me back to my younger days when I would rush home right after school so I wouldn't miss any part of an episode.

Hey Christine,
Count me in as one of those who would like to see the series released on DVD. Having episodes for viewing online or downloading just isn't the same, IMO, as having a DVD collection you can buy.
I agree with what Rob wrote earlier. The series is clearly in demand for release on DVD. Now why it hasn't been released, I have no idea, but given that there is such demand for it, it would sure be nice to see whatever is holding up such a release be settled.
I understand there's a process to go through to get TV series released on DVD, but at some point, I think demand needs to be recognized and differences put aside to fill that demand.
Reply to this
...and even if the demand wasn't high enough to release to stores all over the country, Nickelodeon could just put the DVDs up for ordering online-only- on their own website and Amazon.com. We all know that online sales have always been crazy. They can't go wrong with that, at least.

Count me in for wanting this show officially released on DVD. The bootlegged copies available online and on DVDR's are just not the same. Some episodes are cut off at the beginning or end, or even after a commercial and not to mention the quality is worse than VHS! It would be so nice to have this show preserved on DVD the way it should be... officially. I'd buy a "Best of" or two, but would really rally for season sets. Do we know who owns the rights to this program, so we can fill up their inbox with requests?

As a child in the early 80's I used to watch the show religiously and now that I have a child of my own I would love to share some of the things from my childhood with him. TCDTOTV being one of them. I was hoping that Nick would of released them years ago but it seems this hasn't happened yet. And what about Turkey t.v. where I first got interduced to comics like George Carlin? Well what ever the reason the show has for not getting released yet is on Nick and the writers I guess. Here's hoping. As for finding the show on line, I have yet to find anything from it, although I have yet to check Youtube or Ifilm for it yet but that would be a great start.

George Carlin was featured on Turkey TV? Seriously? I remember the show, but not any Carlin segments.
As for getting a copy of "You Can't", there's also Bit Torrent. Download the program and then do a google search for the show. The copies are pretty poor, but watchable.

Hey there Christine: first off let me say you'll be able to count on me to be a regular poster, glad to see the blog finally came through. Awesome job with the coding. I frankly would have gone berserk even trying.
I got my collection from Barth's Burgery. I forget how much I spent but it was just for the cost of discs and postage. For that I got every ep of YCDTOTV, the three or four 1979s that still exist, and all the existing Whatever Turns You Ons--the pilot was copied off the master tape and still have CJOH VTR at the beginning!
My roommate and I have actually networked our two computers, our Xbox, TiVo and even the Wii together, so I can actually watch anything I want via the broadband, so getting to watch the show on the TV set again was a trip.
It was actually easier to find this show than its been to find more recent Nick shows like Alex Mack. I was able to download the first two seasons on BitTorrent, but I had to scour "The Google" to find the final two; I ended up finding an obscure site that had every episode available for download. They were hosted on a remote file server and I had to pay like $3 to get a seven-day pass to the server; about six days and 20 hours more than I needed but I digress. I eventually got every episode downloaded, including a Season 1 episode that wasn't included in the torrent.
I avoid NickClassics like the plague only because these people are truly profiting off of these shows and the people who worked on them aren't seeing a share. That's why my policy is I torrent a show and keep those until a genuine DVD is released, then I gladly pony up the cash. The trick is only to delete the season you bought the DVD for, lol.
(Wow, 1600 characters already. Boy I'm Motormouth Reincarnated o.o )

Oh and by the way.. I still have Podcast 2 where you mention me and that TV script me and Josh were working on! First time I heard it I swore I was being set up for an opposite ;) If you ever have the time email me and I'll fill you in on the latest.

You know, the bottom line is that YCDTOTV has received the shaft from becoming a legitimate DVD available in all stores. There are worse shows out there portraying everything wrong with the world and they have DVDs on the shelves. I'm not convinced of why the show isn't on DVD. I don't buy the politics existing about why YCDTOTV isn't on a major label or DVD distributor. Signing a petition, I'd bet, is worthless. What I really want to know is, who burned who? Can someone shed any light on some facts? By the time the show comes out on DVD at this pace, Moose's grandkids will be eligible for Social Security. At that point, YCDTOTV will be a Saturday afternoon infomercial... just like those Dean Martin's Dinner Toast commercials that hardly anyone I know gives a hoot for.

Most likely, if you know where to look, then yeah you can find them online, especially since YCDTOTV is a cult classic. As for dvds, I'm surprised they aren't doing anything. They do have their flashback series with Pete and Pete and Clarissa. I'd expect they'd do that one too.

I have downloaded a ton of episodes from torrents, websites and IRC channels. It's the only way for me to have them since they aren't on DVD. If they were t ocome out on DVD, my downloaded copies would hit the dump.
Unfortunately, I doubt the complete series will ever be released. I read that a lot of the original prints of the early shows were tossed out by CJOH, so they exist as bootlegs only, which means if they were to be officially released on DVD, the quality wouldn't be perfect.
I'd still buy them the day they were released in any case. This is a show I'd love my wiener kid to watch when he's older :)

I would love to see some episodes in ITUNES. Better than Youtube by far, and cheaper than buying a DVD. Christine, I used to babysit my niece when YCDTOTV was on Nick and be honest, I enjoyed the show too! Oh yeah, she's 28 now.

Christine, I was an adult when I first saw YCDTOTV; it was an entertaining alternative to the dreadful garbage that was on in the afternoons. The humor got me through several large crises and a number of smaller ones. I still miss the show, and would love to see a new series with the gang all grown up. Hope you are well and that we'll hear more of your current adventures. BTW, about kids younger than your children...my son is 32. Don't know how this can be - so far have successfully avoided growing up!
Best wishes and please say hello to Les Lye...I have a show related story for him... Bob Paine

Okay, I know about the time I find something out everyone else already knows. So here it goes. I FOUND A 1984 BLOOPER REEL OF YCDTOTV ONLINE!!!!! I downloaded it and its great. Its a little over 22 minutes long and the picture is bigger then on the ycdtotv home site. Its so cool to see Les, Christine, Lisa and the rest make some funny mistakes.

You can find a .Torrent file floating around with a TON of episodes in .WMV format (i think like 40 episodes, the UFO special, 2 blooper videos, the best of, and project 131). Its on www.mininova.org if you want, i suppose its no more illegal than the bootleg dvd sets.
